Mátyás Erdély nominated for ASC Spotlight Award for ‘Orphan’

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has unveiled the nominees for its 2026 Outstanding Achievement Awards, recognising excellence across feature films, documentaries, television, and music videos.

Spotlight Award (Sponsored by Panavision)
Steven Breckon for “The Plague”
Mátyás Erdély, ASC, HSC for “Orphan”
Karl Walter Lindenlaub, ASC, BVK for “Amrum”

This year’s nomination is particularly significant, as Mátyás Erdély won the Spotlight Award ten years ago for his cinematography in László Nemes’ Oscar-winning film Son of Saul. “The creative collaboration between cinematographer Mátyás Erdély and director László Nemes is one of the most influential professional partnerships in contemporary Hungarian and international cinema. The cinematography in Orphan and its nomination for a Spotlight Award once again attest to Mátyás Erdély’s exceptional professional skill, sensitivity, and creative vision, as well as the artistic harmony that connects director László Nemes’s vision with the cinematographer’s execution.”

Winners will be celebrated at the 40th Annual ASC Awards on March 8, 2026, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. For those unable to attend in person, the ceremony will be livestreamed on theasc.com.
